Rep. Ilhan Omar on Monday apologized for what critics considered as anti-Semitic feedback made by the Minnesota freshman Democrat over the weekend.
The apology got here a day after Omar posted a pair of tweets suggesting political assist for Israel is pushed by cash from American Jews.
Omar is one in all two Muslim-American girls who had been elected to Congress in final yr’s midterms, together with Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. Each have been vocal advocates for Palestinians and assist the “Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions” (or BDS) motion to punish Israel economically.
Home Minority Chief Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., mentioned final week he would “take motion” to self-discipline the 2, though it’s unclear what he may do to them.
In response, Omar tweeted: “It’s all about the Benjamins baby” — slang for giant sums of cash.
Then, in response to a different Twitter posting questioning who Omar “thinks is paying American politicians to be pro-Israel,” the congresswoman answered “AIPAC!” — the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a robust foyer that organizes conferences and congressional journeys. (Because the New York Occasions notes, AIPAC doesn’t contribute to political campaigns.)
Omar has but to delete the tweets. A spokesman for the congresswoman didn’t instantly return an e-mail in search of further remark.
Earlier Monday, Home Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a joint assertion from Democratic Home management condemning Omar’s tweets and demanding that she apologize.
“Anti-Semitism have to be known as out, confronted and condemned at any time when it’s encountered, with out exception,” the assertion learn. “We’re and can all the time be robust supporters of Israel in Congress as a result of we perceive that our assist relies on shared values and strategic pursuits.
“Respectable criticism of Israel’s insurance policies is protected by the values of free speech and democratic debate that america and Israel share,” the assertion continued. “However Congresswoman Omar’s use of anti-Semitic tropes and prejudicial accusations about Israel’s supporters is deeply offensive. We condemn these remarks and we name upon Congresswoman Omar to instantly apologize for these hurtful feedback.”
Pelosi mentioned she spoke with Omar and that they “agreed that we must use this moment to move forward as we reject anti-Semitism in all forms.”
Omar’s workplace didn’t instantly return a name and e-mail from Yahoo Information in search of remark.
The decision from Democratic leaders got here after McCarthy issued an announcement criticizing the bulk celebration for inaction.
Within the face of Democrats’ abdication of management, Republicans will take motion this week to make sure the Home speaks out towards anti-Semitic hatred. We stand with Israel and the Jewish folks. My full assertion ↓ pic.twitter.com/57zpjiMd51

4 days later, he deleted it.
In the meantime, Chelsea Clinton tweeted that she would reach out to Omar’s office on Monday to debate “anti-Semitic tropes.”
